Which way do I go?…Finding Purpose

Have you struggled mapping out your life? Has it been hard for you to figure out where God is leading you and what He has planned for you to do? Do you wake up each day just rolling with the punches not really sure what you should be doing from day to day?

These feelings are usually related to feeling a lack of “purpose.” Sometimes the daily things we do don’t feel like we have much of a purpose. Even though we are getting things done, we are being productive, bringing in an income and providing for our families needs, sometimes that still leaves us feeling like we are not meeting that need for a purpose. It is usually related to the fact that we do these things day after day so they seem mundane.

Maybe you are content and feel purposeful in doing the things I listed above. But if you aren’t there is a big possibility God is calling you to something! He may be calling you to do something to get your mind off of yourself and on to others. Being a blessing to others blesses them but also blesses us. Why? Because God didn’t make us to do everything we do just for ourselves and our own families.

As I’ve mentioned before, I battle with depression. I have to spend a lot of time working on coping with depression. There are a lot of things I have to do in order to not slip into the pit. It can become very frustrating having to work on myself so much that helping others seems to be too much at times.

When you hear something more than once whether from a friend, on the radio, or in church, chances are God is saying….”Hello.” He is trying to get your attention.

I heard something on the radio one day that stuck with me. Then a week or so later I heard it again. The lady on the radio said, “One of the best things you can do for depression is do something for someone else.” My first response was “How God.” I can barely hold my own head up, let alone someone else’s. But the second time I heard it it really made sense to me. And I listened to God, got out of my comfort zone and did a few things for others.

I say all this to say, this is how God is helping me to find my purpose. By setting aside my own wants and needs, listening to His voice, and doing what He has called me to do.

God spoke to me about something I felt He wanted me to do. It wasn’t something huge and amazing. It wasn’t something those around me would see. It’s a behind the scenes type of ministry. I don’t want to boast about what it is He called me to do. I’d rather it just be between God and I for now. I started participating in this ministry last week. I walked away so blessed! It was a blessing to see people touched and a smile brought to sad, lonely faces. The thing about ministry and choosing to be compassionate is it doesn’t always have to be a daily or weekly thing. And it doesn’t have to be “out front”to be seen by God. An example is intercessory prayer. Oh how we need our prayer warriors! People don’t see you in your room praying your heart out but God does and God hears and God answers! For some it may be cleaning an elderly persons house or making a meal for someone. Again, God sees and God blesses them and you for your willingness to serve. We need all parts of the body of Christ to minister and no one gift is greater or lesser than the other.

I challenge you to seek after God’s purpose for your life. Even if it is a step outside of your comfort zone. Even if it takes you away from things you enjoy. Even if you don’t have time or energy. There is so much joy in giving to others. You will be blessed just as much as them. It will be worth sacrificing your time and energy and God will bless you for doing so. It will fulfill some of that need to have a God given purpose.

On another note, don’t let the enemy rob you of your ultimate purpose. Your first purpose, which is to spend time with God, take care of your families and be commited to church. When everything is in line and in balance, God will use you to fulfill His purpose for your life.

There is purpose even when things feel mundane in your job and raising your children. These are opportunities for us to choose to be grateful even in the mundane. I had this example pop into my mind recently when I was having trouble seeing things positively in my life. I struggle with the same old same old feelings every day. The thought I had was of me standing in my back yard several steps back in the grass. I have 2 large windows in the breakfast room in our house. I was peering through those windows and looking in and imagining what my life would look like to someone looking in those windows. To me, it looks like dirty dishes, laundry piled up, no idea whats for dinner, groceries not bought yet, thinking of all the things I have to do and have procrastinated on and a bored kid up in his room.

But if someone else looks through my window they might see my husband and I goofing off, the dog running around with her ball, the kid coming down in his jammies who begins to play with the dog, a family that sits down at the table and prays and then eats dinner(even if it is the last frozen pizza!)

So what looks to us that there is no purpose in our homes, to someone peering in, they don’t see all the messes, they see a family who has purposed to love each other and be together!

If you are trying to find God’s purpose for your life, try sitting down with Him and praying that He will open doors and show you how you can be a blessing to others.

And if you are struggling with finding purpose in your home life, try peering through those windows and imagine what others might see instead of what you see. And imagine what God see’s. He sees you working to fulfill His purpose for your life even on the days it feels boring and blah.

You have purpose in this world, you have purpose in your home. You have purpose in your church. You have purpose in your community. Ask God where He wants you to go! And GO!

God’s purpose is waiting for you! Don’t be afraid to go after it!

Proverbs 19:21- Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’S purpose that prevails.
